Go Ahead...Eat Fast Foods. Delish, and even somewhat good for you

The headline probably got your attention. But it's for real. You actually can eat certain fast foods, and they won't destroy your diet or be a downer in any other way, including your project to achieve six pack abs

But It's not a total free ride, either. I love French Fries, don't you? The long skinny ones, the curfly cues, or just the plain scrumptous variety dished up at Mickey Ds. Too bad. French Fries are not on the 'go for it' list. Unless, of course, you know for an absolute fact they are not cooked in oil containing trans fats. That may be hard to find, but not as hard as it used to be.

World class trainer, nutrition expert, and author Mike Geary reports seeing studies that indicate as little as 1 gram of trans fat per day can have seri

ous degenerative internal effects on your body.

Serious stuff, too. Like inflammation, clogging and hardening of the arteries, various kinds of cancer, heart disease, and, of course, adding to the flab around the middle.

A typical fast food meal of, say, a breaded chicken sandwich, fries, and a piece of pie for dessert (which are usually made with deadly margerine or shortening) and you're looking at as much as ten grams of transfat. If 1 gram a day is killing you, imagine what 13 grams is doing. And some people consume 20-30 grams of transfats each day!

But you're out with friends and the concensus is, let's go to Mickey Ds for lunch. Not a good thing for you, who is trying in earnest to avoid bad foods in your quest for a flat stomach and six pack abs, but once in a while you just have to suck it up and go along with the crowd. One meal won't kill you.

So what can you eat that minimizes the downside? Let's start with the drinks...no sodas. They're nothing but highly processed fructose corn syrup (think, more belly fat). Water is your best bet, but if you must have something with a little flavor, try unsweetened or lightly sweetened iced tea.

If breakfast is the meal, go with a ham-egg-cheese on an english muffin. Not a croissant...which is loaded with trans fats. Another tasty offering you can try is a fruit and nut salad (most often hard to find for breakfast, but it doesn't hurt to ask).

For lunch or dinner, if they're available the best choices are a grilled chicken sandwish, chili, or maybe a grilled chicken salad without the croutons (another source of trans fats). Generally, fish is an excellent meal. They problem comes when they deep fry it in oil containing trans fats. If you must, remove the breaded coating and eat just the fish.

If you've seen the movie,"Super Size Me" you no doubt noticed the guy who ate fast foods every day of his life was all but down for the count, healthwise. Another guy, tho, ate fast food burgers every day of his life for 30 years, and was only slightly over weight and in reasonably good health. Why? Because he only ate the burgers. He never drank the sodas or ate the fries.

Mickey Ds and most of the other fast food restuarants now have the nutrition facts on the food wrappers, so you can see how much trans fats you're eating. Some got the message about transfats and toute the fact they no longer use oils with trans fats in their cooking.

So it is possible to get a somewhat healthy, non fattening meal at a fast food restaurant. Just stay away from the fries and the sodas (alhto if the fries are cooked in non-transfat cooking oil, then the only problem is the starch in the potatoes, which converts to sugar, and, uh-oh, more belly fat. Best rule of thumb is, if the food is white, don't eat it. And that includes white bread, white pasta, and, of course, white potatoes, among others. That leaves wheat bread or hamburger buns, wheat pasta (speghetti, linguini, etc) and sweet potatoes. Not too hard to take, is it?

The good news is, if you only eat this fast food garbage, uh, food once every two weeks or so, it probably won't kill you. Probably.
